Signs gambling is becoming a problem
A gambling problem rarely shows up all at once. It builds quietly from habits that look harmless on their own until they start feeding each other. Watch for the signs below, in yourself or in someone whose betting worries you. A single sign is reason enough to take a break. - Deposits creeping past your budget. A £50 plan for the evening becomes £80, then £150, then "just one more top-up".
- Chasing your losses. Logging in mainly to win back what you have already dropped, rather than to enjoy the game.
- Hiding what you spend. Deleting casino emails, clearing your browsing history, being vague with a partner about the sums involved.
- Funding play with borrowed money. Reaching for credit cards, overdrafts, buy-now-pay-later or short-term loans to cover deposits, a line that should never be crossed.
- The emotional toll. Feeling tense, anxious or distracted on your days off; nights disturbed by thoughts of your last session or the next chance to break even.
- Strain on the people close to you. Arguments over money, unpaid bills, or missing family time so you can keep playing.
- Other interests slipping away. The hobbies you once loved quietly giving way to gambling.
Deposit, session and loss limits on every licensed site
Every casino holding a licence from a proper regulator (the UKGC, MGA, Spelinspektionen, KSA, Spillemyndigheden, ANJ or ACMA) is now required by law to keep the controls below inside your account settings. After the 2024 to 2026 rule changes rolled out across the European Economic Area, deposit, session and loss caps are available on every licensed site. Put them in place from day one, not once a bad run has already happened.
- Deposit cap. Caps what you can pay in across a day, week or month. Take a moment at signup to land on a number you would be comfortable losing.
- Loss cap. Stops play automatically the moment your net loss over the period hits the amount you chose. A firm backstop under the deposit cap.
- Session cap or reality check. Ends the session, or fires a reminder pop-up, once a set number of minutes has passed.
- Wager or stake cap. Caps the total you can bet in a given window, regardless of how much you win along the way.
- Cooling-off. Freezes the account for a stretch of anything from 24 hours up to 30 days.
- Single-site self-exclusion. Closes the account outright, for six months, a year, or permanently.
Lowering your deposit and loss caps is usually instant. Raising them, on the other hand, generally triggers a built-in wait of 24 hours or longer, on purpose, so that an impulsive decision cannot undo a level-headed one.
National self-exclusion programs
Excluding yourself from one casino has its limits, since nothing stops you from opening an account at the next one over. A national self-exclusion program shuts you out of every licensed casino in the country with a single sign-up. It costs nothing, stays confidential and is legally binding on operators. Helping someone close to you
When the worry is about someone in your household rather than yourself, there are practical things you can do without waiting for them to ask.
